Video Games Are The Devil

You know what? I was going to make a post about Jack Thompson...a while ago, when it was actually fucking TOPICAL. I think the latest Punks and Nerds says everything I need to anyway. (For matter of archival purpose, if you're reading this later the comic I am citing was posted on October 21st, 2005) Quite frankly, his biggest claim to fame was getting 2 Live Crew banned, and you remember all the good THAT did moral indecency. It only propelled a shitty band no one had heard of to international stardom and a billboard toping CD... Anyway, it's like Tycho said, the battle against moral indecency will continue whether we like it or not, and things we think of as perfectly normal will continue to be called lued and vulgar whether or not it's the case simply so somebody has something to rally against and give themselves a name to hold on to.

I'll still be sure to take a picture when my I Hate Jack Thompson T-Shirt gets here though. The whole fuss DID bring up something rather important though. That is, charity. Specifically, the Penny Arcade run Child's Play. Simply put, it's time to show what we're made out of here at Sold Out. So me and my friends are going to keep a running total of how much we donate to Child's Play, and I'll keep the running tab updating in the news box. If any of my readers donate to Child's Play, I am pretty sure you get a reciept when you donate in some form, just pass the important information from that reciept my way and I'll add it to our running total.

Course, Child's Play hasn't started yet...I'll keep you updated.

I got in my demo disc of Dragon Warrior (I know they're calling it Quest this time as they do in Japan, but...TRADITION, DAMNIT) VIII. Surprise surprise, the American voice acting feels slightly off and not quite what I was hoping for. It's not that hard! I've seen it done several times! The problem is of course, America has no real idea what Dragon Quest is, or why it's great. They have forgotten the face of their fathers.

That said, the gameplay of course sticks to its routes in many important ways. It's still turn based. It still has that mildly cheesy but oh so yummy feel to it. Of course, they added in some new stuff this time. It's the first DQ in a long time with what I would refer to as “quality” graphics. All done by the guy behind Dragon Ball and Chrono Trigger. Good stuff. They also added a skill points system. Hopefully it'll make more sense in the real game than it did in the demo. They also have this system of powering up your attacks...pretty straight forward really, you take a turn to power up and you uh...power up. Whoopdidoo.

Also, I played a little Metroid Pinball at the local Wally World (See also: Wal-Mart) the other day. It's uh...Pinball. Pinball that shakes a little. Though, those L/R buttons have a remarkably quality feel for a pinball game, it's certainly no Sonic Spinball.

That's about all I gotta say right now.

Just so you know, Akira Toriyama (DB/Chrono Trigger) has been doing the character art for Dragon Quest from the beginning.

You know, I thought he had been doing the art for a long time, but then DQ7 made me say "...there is no way that man had anything to do with this one."

For the record, when I see DQ, I don't think Dragon Quest, I think Dairy Queen. What the 7 means is beyond me.
