| | It's that time of year again. Posted on Tuesday 8Nov05, at 12:44 pm. | | |
With the days becoming shorter and shorter, I find myself in a strange place. Indeed, it seems as if Kite, the nocturnal one, is sleeping during normal human hours these days. This means when the comic went up last night, whoops, I was asleep. My bad.
Nobody really seems to be complaining, as almost everyone understands, as I have made clear in almost every rant since it started, that Kyle is currently sans personal laptoptron. Currently, updating isn't as often as we like. If we EVER dip below once a week though...then we'll admit we have a problem. I never liked rehab. Silly people thinking they know what is good for me.
The moment I've personally been waiting for has arrived, Penny Arcade has officially announced Child Play is officially open. Meaning later in the week I'm starting the official tally in the newsbox as to how much me and my friends have donated. I just need to make the banner I've been thinking about first is all. By my count, we've already given $200, and we plan on doing more. If you want to donate to Child's Play, just follow that link up there. If you need help, more information, whatever, feel free to contact me and I'll give you the information. If you're a fan of Sold Out and want to make note of your contribution on the website, send me the important donation information and I'll be sure to add your total to the running total.
I'm hoping we can get about a grand raised, but I'll be happy if we get together $500 at least.
That all out of the way, I happened to watch the movie Jarhead this weekend. Jarhead is nice little war movie about Operation Desert Storm. You may remember it as that kind-of war that Bush Sr. went into and Bush Jr. took it upon himself to finish. You may also remember that uh...not a lot happened. You may wonder, how do you make a movie about a war like that? Well, you make Jarhead. I feel it pretty accurately reflects the actions of that particular war.
I'm kind of weird in what really entertains me though. I mean, ok, there was a great story here. It was full of great context and meaning. There was definitely depth to the overall story and you got a great feel for what it was actually like for these people. As well, the characters are brilliantly portrayed and there is feeling of realism and depth.
Moreso than all of this was the filming itself. It reminds me a lot of Fargo, and to a lesser extent The Untouchables. Their use of space is incredible. For about two hours your world is contorted into a sea of beige, brown, and grey. This makes for a sort of negative space that draws your eyes in on the action and makes things feel more there. I personally thought that was an amazing touch, and every single scene seemed methodically laid out and beautifully captured. The scenery is absolutely amazing, and feels beyond real in this movie. As well, their choice of music in this movie seems to go along perfectly to the feel they were going for, and I really appreciated that.
So...yeah, good movie, go see it.
I also had a chance to put my hands on The Warriors over the weekend. Definitely not enough time to get a real feel for the game, but long enough to understand the mechanics and the gameplay. I'm actually a little disappointed in this one. I was hoping for a nice free roaming sort of gameplay like Grand Theft Auto. Instead, you feel rather stunted in the performance area. You're given a set of objectives to complete, and as you complete them there are bonus objectives and side activities you can engage in (such as looting and jacking car stereos.) After enough time the gameplay feels like second hand. Unlock the door, steal the merchandise, beat people up, tag, and avoid the cops. Overall, it's lacking the depth I was hoping for – but then I only played a couple hours worth of gameplay, don't take my word as the final word for it.
The gang activity parts are pretty cool though, you're in control of a group of guys, and the AI is pretty smart. You can issue commands which they'll follow, but if you do something that deviates from the plan they're often smart enough to figure out that things have changed. Battle is also pretty fun, most of your basic brawler moves are all there. Though, honestly, battle just isn't as dynamic as I would have liked.
At least the characters are portrayed pretty well, and no one can say they didn't get the feel down pretty well.

My gmail went crazy and sent out a bunch of spam about getting a larger penis, no idea what is up with that. My apologies if you were a recipient.

...was the first operation my brother was apart of. Luckily it wasn't his last, he got home from Iraq, again, almost two years ago and it's probably one of the most releaving things in existance to have a family member come home from war.
My brother-in-law just got back about a year ago, and it was also a relief, just not having to worry about my sister and her son being left alone anymore.
And I'll be the next one off to war, I promise that. I will be joining the military, though I will try in all my power NOT to be an infantry unit aka grunt.
Wish me luck, for the kittens will need your protection if I am brought down :)

Watch out for The Patroits, and try not to get on thier bad side. If it is revealed of your power over kittens, they will come after you, and take you at any cost.

Ojimo... poor Ojimo, Ruler of Kittens. How we knew thee. Or didn't, but that isn't the point, is it? If you can, try to be someone who wouldn't be on the front lines. The kittens need you more then your platoon mates.
They just see you as a bullet sponge.

On a related note, I was e-mailed by Kaiser Ryu. It was actually incredibly funny to read. I'm a mean bastard, but I don't care. I enjoy it. X3

...I'll be trying my best to stay away from those meat shields they call infantry. Though my brother-in-law is one .
Thanks for the concern guys :D
