How many open letters have I written now?
Posted on Tuesday 7Feb06, at 12:47 pm.

That latest comic seriously made me giggle. That is definitely not a Kite comic if you have not figured it out.

I write a lot of open letters to people. None of them ever reach their recipient. I figure this one will be in kind, but I want to vent to someone. You guys will do.

I honestly worked like a stupid idiot all week last week. I had a test, two quizes, three homeworks, and a research meeting to attend. What kept me going was Sunday. I was going to get an autograph from Tucker Max.

Not only that, but I had a wonderful plan. I was going to get a friend of mine a signed copy of this book. She has done a lot for me. She taught me to use Linux. She taught me basics in Perl. She also introduced me to the wit and wisdom of Tucker Max. Needless to say, I owe her a lot, and this was to be the payback.

When I get there, I see this:

Now, of course, any other day I would have been perfectly fine with sticking around Tech campus until Tucker can come. After all, Tucker Max might be the most awesome dude ever. But...there was a problem.

The Super Bowl is at 6:30. I had my friend Noel with me (whom I had convinced the night before he should meet Tucker, after a reading of Tucker Tries Butt Sex to a small crowd of people who were laughing so hard they could hardly hear what I said), and Noel was not having that shit.

My friend is twenty. His plan was to be shithoused before the Super Bowl. He could NOT drink at Fado's. Besides, Fado's promised to be loud. Really, really fucking loud.

I wish I could say Tucker ruined my weekend to make this story sting...but fuck it, it's a stupid signature. What makes me sad though is that I can't do anything for the other friend. At least she'll never know of the great surprise she had in store...unless she reads this.

So, a big Fuck You to Tucker Max. Before I remember how fucking awesome he is.

So, I saw Hostel last Friday. That movie is...something else. It was obvious designed to give you the full gambit of emotions, attempting to give outright visceral reactions. I laughed, I was repulsed, I wanted to throw up, I became mildly arroused, I might have cried if not for me being a man and thusly not capable of tears...in the span of two hours. That's saying something.

The movie's pretty cool, I'll give you that, but you will leave feeling...awkward. If not for the full on sex scenes, maybe for the part where someone power drills a guy you were just getting to know.

It's not for the squeemish, you have been warned.

As well, one last reminder before I decide that this whole thing has been a bad idea...we are still accepting donations. All people who donate will get the super awesome donation package (wallpaper, sketches, bonus comic), and get access to Sold Out Insider (background information about the universe and an ability to help form the future of Sold Out).

But, if we don't get more donations, we're going to have to cancel any plans for doing the package again. So...there you go.

In one of the earlier black and white comics, it said Kirin was the "sysop". While this can be interpereted at "system operator", it technically means an operater of a BBS, or bulliten board system, basically an admin on a forum. Unless the Latis is made of steel forums or something...=/

It's system operator. Anybody who says otherwise is made of lies, deceit and more lies.

Etymology

Sysop does mean system(s) operator. The old BBSes and timeshare systems were in fact systems, and they had operators. There's no contradiction. Forums also have "moderators" and "administrators," but you wouldn't call the guy who runs a debate a forum technician. Just saying.

The term is also really appropriate for the futuristic setting of Sold Out. Presumably the word sysop (which was popularised in the 80s and 90s after BBSes) became a normal part of the language; there's no reason it wouldn't be used more widely to fit future circumstances, like many words today which have long histories. There are lots of examples and at least half of them are awfully fascinating; on Wikipedia you can check them out on -onym pages like Backronym and Backformation and others. Lots of great stuff, like, did you know that "Peas" was originally a mass noun (like people) and that there was no such word as pea? The creation of "pea" was similar to the creation of "burgle" and "enthused" (a word which I hope to God will not catch on).

D'oh! For those of y'all that don't know, Lord British founded Origin Studios, a famous game company located in Austin, Texas that is responsible for the Wing Commander and Ultima series.

Oh! My bad, looks like there's multiple Lord Britishes to reference in the games community. Still a good reference though.

I think Sold Out should feature more of the <blink> HTML tag. Lots more.
