Hunters vs crab hand

Script hashing continues for a little while. Today's joke actually covers a strip where Kirin wakes up while Meria is busy with Ciere and heals herself by summoning someone to heal her, and Meria pouts over not being needed. I tried to do an image search for something that would make the joke more obvious but a google image search for "naked snake healing" returns an image of "big breasted nurse healing".

<MrKite> search for image -> big boss healing
<MrKite> return -> big breasted nurse healing
<Shaezerus> (looks like Meria really is needed after all)

Your results may vary, especially if you never turned google image filtering off.

So, I've been playing Metroid: Hunters lately. I have never been good at first person shooters, and unlike Metroid: Prime which was far heavier with the action, this game is just straight up first person shooters. Much to my dismay, the game actually reinforces this notion. The upgrades are all new weapons, you start off with the morphball and bombing ability so worrying about getting those two things is completely out of the equation.

As well, they're not exactly sneaky with item placement or whatnot in this game. Most everything is about as blatant as a shot to the face. I never thought I'd see the phrase "headshot" in Metroid, oh the days are gone. But I digress, outside of some morphball mazes, you're not getting anything all that sneaky in this game to get over. Which is a shame, because that sneakyness is what I always loved about the series.

The game itself is polished until it's absolutely as pretty as it's going to get on the DS. However, this seems to come with tradeoffs, as a lot of the places in the game look...shall we say amazingly similar. As if, maybe, they had trouble producing more areas and just left us with these things. Not to say they aren't pretty, but navigation can get extremely disorienting in non-linear areas. Thankfully, most areas are relatively linear, rather than being the classic Metroid catacombs problem. The map is not very helpful and helpful at the same time, I suppose it's just something you'd have to see to understand, but highlighting the room while it's floating in a bunch of other rooms doesn't help much.

That being said...if you liked FPS, you'll love this game. Hell, I don't like FPS, and I still dig it. You regularly get other Hunters, with their own strange powers and abilities, which will come in and school you in their unique style of kung-fu. Your kung-fu doesn't have to be superior against these guys, but a loss means losing your crystals and a rematch later on will have to occur. Don't sweat it too much however, rematches occurring is invariable.

Also, the weapons are pretty diverse, and have different effects on different things. It's a little reminiscent of Megaman actually, which I can totally dig. Are you listening, Capcom?

The delightful thing about these multiple hunters is in multiplayer you get to control them and their unique abilities. I gave this mode a try with Kyle, and he schooled me seven ways to oblivion. I got off one kill, but I know for a fact that was more blind luck than anything matching skill. My attacks just caught him in a corner and he could not get out and couldn't hit me from the angle. A cheap kill is still a kill however!

Controls are relatively smooth as far as FPS goes. You'll really wish at points you had an analog, since strafing is all fine and well but has the ability to feel a little awkward at points when you have to move say in a circle around a giant boss. Still, they did a great job with camera work and your ability to shoot fuckers, I'm modestly impressed. However, be forewarned that your left hand is going to be dieing after holding the fucking brick that is a DS in your hand for too long.

Long story short, while I like it, it's a hard game to honestly recommend for the adventure mode alone. It is definitely a multiplayer experience. Without the wi-fi abilities, this would just be another game, but as it stands it's pretty impressive. This game as far as I know is the first to feature areas you could actually consider lounges as well, instead of randomly drawing from a list of friends - an ability I love madly. As well, you can leave text and voice messages in these areas. So, what you have here is the ability to do relatively the same things you can do in XBox Live for free! I happen to like free. Hooray, free!

I think that's a good note to leave on.

...Hm. I think this review of Hunters may have done what Kyle had not, and convinced me I needed to get it. So I will, although I don't know when.

I might possibly recognize it, but the coloring would be wrong for what I thought it was. However the positioning of the paintbrush makes that such a nice THRUST pose.

I have one question: Did they get rid of that damned ammo system yet?

"What is that little sction figure of on the left side of Tristan's desk?"
-It's one of my (retired) characters from a Megaman X RP I participate in.

"I have one question: Did they get rid of that damned ammo system yet?"
-They kept ammo in for the "extra" weapons (Battlehammer, Imperialist, etc) but they all draw from one set of ammo. UA Expansions are the most prevalent Expansions in the game, and they give you 30 units each, plus they completely refill your entire stock when you get one... which means you can theoretically go through the entire game never picking up UA refills and still not run out of ammunition.
