Before I say anything, I want to remind you guys that the button for voting for the comic is still very much in existence, and being in 150th place kind of sucks. However, this fact that we're in this place does remind me of something, of some consequence.
A few things are making me think of writing this rant. For, one, I was wearing my I Hate Jack Thompson shirt. A few people asked me who Jack Thompson is, and I could not remember what he's done, but I remember why I hate him. I hate him because he wishes to outright ban some of the things I love dearly. Keeping children away from these things like violent video games and hard core gangsta rap is important, but far more dear to me is the need for free speech.
As well, at the same time, one of my favorite authors, Tucker Max is having legal problems, in relation to a recent law that could potentially, if exercised in the way many blogosphere types think it can be and DiMeo seems to be hopeful that their fears will be founded. Namely, he wants to stop people from posting anonymously on the internet things of a libelous nature.
But it is these things that remind us why the Internet is so popular, and why so many people, like us, write their thoughts, comments, editorials, comics, stories, etc. on the Internet. Because we can. To publish a webcomic, a blog, a fiction site, music, etc., you do not have to be talented, know anybody, or even censor yourself. Since the Internet is open to everybody, it's a forum for all of us to share. You can be as crass and rude as you want to. You can say what you want to. You don't have to worry about selling your ideas to a large audience, you can focus on whatever size audience you like.
There are a lot of webcomics out there. Too many for me to even bother counting. Many of them could never ever be published under any other circumstance. People just want to have their dreams published. All I really want to do is write. I love to write, I love to tell stories, and I love to give my opinions. I've written websites for tens of people, done it for years, and now I'm writing Sold Out for hundreds of people, and in the future maybe thousands of people.
Because of the glut of information out there, popularity is not insured. It's hard to tell what people really want to read. As well, getting your name out is difficult, and there are traps and setbacks along the ways (such as people like Jack Thompson and DiMeo). However, that is exactly what is beautiful. The Internet is the last bastion for true free speech left to the world. You can't say what you want most anywhere else. This is a place for guys like us who just want to get something out. And, for the people who have problems with us, well they can just post their opinions too.
So, in a weird way, I'm glad to see I'm not the most popular webcomic on the Internet. If there was, I would worry, because we would have reached a day when free speech is dieing, or Sold Out just gets stupidly popular. However, free speech is not something we can just take for granted. We have to voice our opinions against the people who would say we shouldn't. Listen to whatever violent music you wish to. Read blogs from people with insane ideas and notions. Play the most bloody games you can. May the Internet always be the soap box of the world.

Hey, why'd you guys change the new comic thing? It used to be comic -1 that was always the new one, but now my bookmarks are a bit wack. What caused the big chage?

Oops. My mistake. I just did a couple tweaks recently to the SOC engine recently which had the side-effect of breaking that. Namely, made sure that the layout would still look good EVEN when you block our ads (!!) and had a little "Oops! Error!" box appear when you go to a nonexistant page. (Before, it would just send you straight to the main page without explanation, and Kite thought that was too confusing)
The fact that going to soldoutcomic.com/-1 didn't behave properly anymore was not intentional. And I just fixed it so your bookmarks work again :) Cheers!
By the way, plain old www.soldoutcomic.com/ should take you to the latest comic as well. Whatever works!

Wow, didn't expect that. It still did take me to the new comic (it took me to the front page) but I just thought you were changing the layout... which you where. Or something. And...uh... Getting close to comic 100. And stuff. Maybe you should do something about that. In a good way. Or something. yeah...

Not changing the layout, just fixing some display issues that we didn't know people were having. From what I understand everything should look how it is supposed to now.
I am Comic. | |
