[The Beginning - Episodes 1-3] 1 - Blacktion and a Strei Empire invader duke it out in Shinjuku, the latter overpowering the former due to the pilot's weak abilities as a Grand. Coming to a crash nearby Fleed, the heavily injured and dying pilot bails out and notices an errant Grand reaction from him. Attempting a desperate measure, the generic pilot more or less steals Fleed and forces Blacktion's AI to register itself and the Tion Engine to him, leaving the boy as the robot's pilot despite having no prior knowledge or experience; the ensuing battle ends up with Blacktion victorious, but causing even more collateral damage than the Strei Empire invader did. 2 - Alerted to the new "pilot", the Tion Research Institute activates an override code in Blacktion and sends it back to the laboratory themselves. After some confusion and argument Fleed is unwillingly kept as Blacktion's pilot, mostly because there are no other Grands at the Institute's disposal. He is then deferred to Blacktion's chief engineer Rai who immediately sets him off on a harsh training schedule in order to develop his piloting skills. On the Strei Empire side, Soale has become personally alerted to Blacktion's launch and subsequent victory over the invader sent to Japan, though the notion is dismissed as a fluke. 3 - Fleed's training begins more or less with constant disaster, through a combination of his own ineptitude at piloting giant robots and Rai's extremely high standards; the string of failure is interrupted when the Institute receives notice of a second Strei Empire invader appearing in the same area, presumably to continue what the first started. Again, Blacktion is launched, this time with Fleed as its pilot, and begins its second fight, which goes slightly less catastrophically though Fleed's bad handling of the robot continues to show. By this time, Soale's interest turns toward the black robot and its pilot, now convinced that Blacktion could present an actual threat to his plans. [The Plasma Catapult Rail - Episodes 4-6] 4 - Fleed and Blacktion continue with their rigorous "training" as supervised by Rai, quoted as nearly fourteen hours a day with no break. Meanwhile, Soale is undeterred by his recent losses and sends another invader to Japan, this time an area where the Tion Energy-powered robot could not respond so easily. When the Institute is notified of its appearance Blacktion is launched as normal, though by the time Fleed gets there the invader has already destroyed much of the surrounding area and self-evolved, absorbing much of the Tion Energy it came for. Even with this apparent handicap Blacktion is still victorious, though the entire battle leaves Fleed himself rather shaken that he couldn't get there quickly enough. On a review of the battle, Sato propositions the Institute to devise a system that would sortie Blacktion long distances in a short amount of time; Rai is called on to assist with the project, leaving Fleed a break in his training to contemplate his role as Blacktion's pilot. 5 - After several days of general quiet, Fleed finally decides to take a day out and leave the Institute, though is met by Rai who had decided to take a weekend herself. After some twisting, he agrees to let her accompany him, if only so that he'd have a guide. While the general public seemed to hold mixed feelings towards Fleed himself due to his inexperienced recklessness against the outright destructive powers of the Strei Empire, one fellow American "tourist" introducing himself as Eiren happened to take a particular liking to him, claiming that he witnessed all three fights and "just had to meet" Blacktion's pilot; through techniques not unlike what were pulled on him earlier, Fleed is forced to allow Eiren to tag along with the two for a time. After a relatively good day, both TRI members depart from Eiren's company and start their return to the laboratory when a Strei Empire invader emerges, this time apparently trained on a now-defenseless Fleed directly until a remotely-driven Grand Connect flies in to the rescue of both him and Rai, returning them to the Institute where Fleed's robot is activated to battle against the following alien properly. 6 - With the TRI's new launching system, the Plasma Catapult Rail, nearing completion, Rai manages to incorporate its finishing construction into Fleed's training, using him in Blacktion as heavy lifting and hauling equipment, much to the Grand's rather loud objections throughout. After an intensive day of construction, Fleed catches up with a visiting Eiren, who takes particular interest in the large, incomplete train-based platform, which becomes the center of conversation for some time before he leaves. Not even the morning after the Strei Empire begins its attack, this time in numbers, with one invader directly assaulting the Institute and another almost on the other side of Japan entirely. Blacktion is immediately mobilized in response, and after a relatively easy fight the closer threat is dispatched, though not without damaging the Plasma Catapult Rail itself; with the platform both incomplete and damaged, many of the Institute's members are convinced that it would be impossible for Blacktion to reach the other invader in time. Not willing to give up, however, Fleed manages to quickly jury-rig a minor temporary fix to the Plasma Catapult Rail with spare construction materials and board it safely, telling the Institute to disregard the danger and launch anyway. After some hesitation from the others stationed in the area, Rai follows through with the plea and activates the launch function, catapulting Blacktion through the air towards its target with relatively minimal initial trouble, though a rather embarassing landing. Unfazed, Fleed engages the invader in yet another battle and emerges victorious, though only after his celebration to the Institute that the Plasma Catapult Rail actually works is he told that he completely destroyed it in the process, and told by Rai that he'd have to rebuild it all over again.
