| | Comedies and where they go wrong Posted on Friday 30Dec05, at 1:00 am. | | |
What can I say? I have absolutely loved this arc. The dialogue has been dead on. It's kind of cute, charming...just dead on. I love the characters, they just work so well.
Too bad they all die.
I said last time I would explain why everybody should avoid Fun with Dick and Jane. So, I will. First off, let me say this. Jim Carey has some absolutely brilliant scenes in it. The scene where he goes mental and steals somebody else's lawn is great. The scene where he is running to get to the interview first, fighting off the other guy in business suits, is also great. In fact, if not for Carey, this might have been the worst movie I have seen in theatres.
So, what's so terrible? Without even getting into the really annoying stuff, first off there is no chemistry in this married couple. They don't belong together, and you feel BAD for their kid. Apparently he was raised by the maid, who is Mexican, and believes himself to be Mexican. Again, not funny, just pitiful. The plot, as well, is hackney. You can perfectly understand WHY they do the things they do, but you will be constantly saying to yourself "There is no way they would do that, and even if they did there is no way they can get away with it..." It requires a big leap of faith.
So, what REALLY pissed me off about this movie? Let me preface this by saying that I donate to the democratic party. I hate cooperate greed, and am very much pro-union and all that fun stuff. However, the ENTIRE message of this movie is that the fat cat republicans are screwing up this country, and the yuppies should be paying attention because it could and often times recently IS them that is getting screwed over by "the system." Attempting to cross a strong (and, really stupid might I add - we all know that big cooperations hardly ever have our best interest in minds, unless it aids them getting in our wallet) political message with straight out comedy and a little bit of Ocean's 11 just does not work. Ok, get it? Don't see it. Want to know how it ends? The owner is swindled into giving all of his money to the people who worked for it. There, MOVIE RUINED.
Seriously, do not see this movie.
Now, a movie you SHOULD see. I got a chance to see The Producers (sadly, airing at VERY select theatres) recently. It was absolutely hysterical. There are moments I nearly died laughing. Nathen Lane, Mathew Broderic, and even Uma Thurman are all absolutely amazing singers and actors, and do a wonderful job in this movie. For the first time, as well, I have found Uma to be...well, damned hot. I did not know anyone could get me to think this of Uma Thurman, who I honestly thought was a strange looking lady before this. The funny parts are so funny you will be doubled over, pounding the arm rest laughing. As well, there is a never ending string of cameo appearances.
...ok, so there is a few small problems. The songs can go on far too long sometimes. It comes off with the feeling of a great product suddenly jammed with filler right before production. But, it's not enough to really bring the whole thing down.
It's so great, I did something I thought I would never, ever do. Call me gay, I don't care, I went on iTunes and downloaded the full soundtrack. Listening to Uma belt out "When You Got It, Flaunt It", as well as the hilarious tracks "Keep It Gay" and "Heil Myself", well...good stuff. I highly recommend it.
That's enough for me, now you know what to watch and what to avoid, I've done my part. Now, go forth and be good consumers.

Agreed. The Producers is an absolutely hysterical movie. Though I do wish they'd left in all the songs from the Broadway version ("The King of Broadway" has some of the funniest lines I've ever heard in a song, and "Where Did We Go Right?" is pure brilliance). Other than that, it was just as hilarious as it was on stage.
I also advise you to see the original 1968 version, because while Matthew Broderick does an astounding job as Leo Bloom, I think Gene Wilder did an even better one.

What is Tristan saying in that last panel? I was able to read what I think is "I've been waiting for you, gunstar" which makes no sense to me, but what's it saying above that? "ngrfhm"?

I already have the movie soundtrack but haven't seen the movie. I will agree thought htat 'Where Did We Go Right?" is sadly missing from the soundtrack, it was one of my favorite songs from the musical.

I have seen the original, and, of course, Gene Wilder is ALWAYS better. I'm looking at you, Willy.
As well, you read what Tristain said perfectly. I do believe that Kyle was referencing Gunstar Heroes, but I could be wrong.

Oh, come on. If you're dreaming about something and end up vocalizing it, how much makes sense to anyone who's able to hear? Sleep talk is humorous. But anyway. I can't manage anything else to talk about, so I'll leave everyone with that.

Having beaten Gunstar Heroes many many times, I can say with relative certainty that line does not appear in it. Only one way to find out for sure though...

Can I use the second frame of this comic for like...my avatar or something? It's really funny, I screenshotted it and have that panel saved in MS paint, but I want your permission before I use it in my avatar and/or signature in a forum. (I'll give credit and a link to the site if you want, might attract more readers)

Just talked to Kyle (the artist) he said to go ahead and use it. A link would be nice too, more traffic is not a bad thing, but not required.

| | Producers! 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted on Thursday 5Jan06, at 8:27 pm. by an anonymous mook | |
First, understand this, my family is a bunch of born vocalists and actors. My sisters listen to so many musical soundtracks that I've lost count. The second one I'd ever heard though was The Producers. The broadway version. I fell in love with it instantly.
When I first saw the comercial for The Producers I -literally- squeeled, turned on my computer, and spammed my sisters' MSN accounts.
I just saw it on Sunday with mi mariposa, and I about died in joy just watching it. I love Nathan Lane and Mathew Broderick, always have, always will. However, I found that I prefered the original cast on Broadway, but it was still simply amazing.
Mi mariposa owns the one starring Gene as Bloom, and is going to make me watch it sometime next week. :D
