| | I have a dream where I'm shoving L shaped blocks in a dam to stop the water, and the dam bursts. Is that weird? Posted on Tuesday 28Mar06, at 4:02 am. | | |
In today's update we have...holy shit. Yeah, this has been the first time I have looked at the new comic and have honestly been taken back by what I saw. Now, me and Kyle came up with the idea, together, for Ciere to wear some priestess robes. We kind of wanted a not to how in MMOs the female characters wear...shall we say, revealing outfits? I'm reminded of "priestess panties" in Ragnarok Online. Something just weird about seeing a servant of God's white cotton underwear.
I haven't reviewed something in a while. We've been so caught up with ourselves and getting this bucket off the ground, any time I ask around what I should be talking about I get "advertising!" "sell shit" "more readers!" Fuck it, let's talk about something close to my heart.
Let's play some Tetris, motherfucker.
It is very likely I have played more Tetris than healthy. I have a cell phone entirely because I had to know that at any time I was capable of playing Tetris. That and, you know, the whole calling people thing. But that's just a secondary feature. I've made it up to level 18 on that thing. Which is no small chore. That was at least a solid hour of my sitting on my ass clearing lines. Not to mention, I own the original gameboy version of the game. Oh, and I also own the Tetris 3D game, which plays a lot like Connect Four. There are more lines out there that need to be cleared, that is my mission.
So, when I found out that Tetris DS would, potentially, allow a shit load of people (I'm not sure, I think it's 8, but it could be anywhere up to 16, I honestly don't know enough people who own DSs to find out) people to play competitively at the same time, I had to be in on this shit.
The gameplay for classic Tetris is...well, it's fucking Tetris. Up until level fifteen anyway. After that, the blocks appear at the very bottom, as if by magic. The game has made it rather cheap however, as you can spin the blocks forever. This means, if you want to play the game forever, you literally can now.
They also built in a lot of other modes. For when straight up Tetris gets boring. I'll just mention some of them really quickly, as really explaining all of them would take some time, and remembering the modes would mean I'd have to actually open my DS. There is puzzle mode, where you have to drop specific blocks in order to clear lines, and you only get those few blocks. There's push, where each player works as a side, and try to push the other player to their side. There's touch, where you move blocks that are already there around and try to clear all the blocks to get the block with the balloons which is sitting at the top of the stack to the ground. There's mission where the game wants you to do a specific task in order to get to the next level (clearing two lines with the stair shaped block is NOT easy) and uh...I think there are other modes, but they're not worth mentioning if there are.
The wifi play is pretty much the draw here. You're able to play anytime versus up to four people on standard mode or two on push (I think that's it anyway). It has its failings though. One person timing out crashes the game. The setup isn't as clean as you want it to be, you have to have a pretty good wireless connection to keep it playing correctly, etc. At the end of the day, if you were annoyed with Mario Kart DS's wireless play, you're going to be annoyed with Tetris.
What gets me is...they're trying so hard to draw in the veteran gamer crowd. Everywhere you go in the game, they're referencing classic Nintendo titles. The music is from old games, the backgrounds are from old games, etc. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the techno remixes of old Nintendo games, and the fact that the block turning sounds like Mario shooting a fireball makes me smile a little...but damnit man. I CRAVE the ability to play Tetris to the good old Tetris theme. You know exactly what I mean, Nintendo. You're not winning me over by having puzzle mode emulate Yoshi Cookie.
Honestly, at the the end of the day, it sort of leaves you wanting to go back and play the old Tetris. Where you CAN'T play standard mode forever. With the good old classic music. Sadly, this option is missing in Tetris DS. However, it's totally fucking cake for what it has, ans is absolutely worth it. I guess I'll never be able to retire my original Tetris cart.

What did the robes look like -before- the alterations?
Oh, and how would the other priests respond to the alterations? How would Ciere explain it to them?

I think Kyle was talking about drawing a few women in the normal priestess outfit to show the edits, apparently they were rather small. I'll see if I can get him on that, since some interest has been made to that.
